Polarised Neutron School

Prior to the main meeting, we will hold a polarised neutron school at the ISIS facility.  This will run on the 1st and 2nd July, and will include introductory lectures on polarised neutron techniques and instrumentation, as well as hands-on practical training on polarised neutron instruments.  The lectures will cover:

  • Basic principles of polarized neutron scattering (G. Nilsen, ISIS)
  • Polarized neutron instrumentation (K. Andersen, ESS)
  • Polarized neutron reflectometry and SANS (N.-J. Steinke, ISIS)
  • Larmor precession techniques (A. Washington, ISIS)
  • Polarized inelastic scattering (TBC)
  • Magnetic diffuse scattering (J. Paddison, Cambridge)

These will be followed by practicals on diffraction, reflectometry and 3He as well as hands-on data analysis sessions (please bring a laptop; list of required software to follow).

The school will be open to graduate students and post-doctoral researchers who have some knowledge of neutron scattering and who seek additional training in polarised neutrons, and will provide the necessary background for the PNCMI conference later in the week. There will be no fee for the school, and accommodation will be provided at Milton Hill House.

Registration information for the school may be found online here - please note that you must register for the school and conference separately, and that attendance to PNCMI is required. The deadline for registration is the 8th of June, 2018. As there will only be 15 places available on the school, however, we recommend registering as early as possible.
